NEGATIVE IMPACT OF SOCIAL MEDIA
1. Reduced Offline Interactions
Social Media could have led to more interactions with our family and friends online. However, it has also lead to the diminishing of the most basic form of offline communication – conversations. Technology has become so user friendly that the very use fosters our obsessions, dependence and encourages us to use it more.
More often than not, we check Twitter, update Instagram or even reply Whatsapp chats when we are out with our family or friends. Unknowingly, people could be spending too much time on social media that they miss out the opportunity to bond with their family and friends through face-to-face interaction.

2. Social Media Anxiety Disorder (SMAD)
People enjoy posting about their lives on social media platforms. But when readers start leaving negative comments, the pressure of social networking could build up, leading to Anxiety Disorders. According to The India Times, Social Media Anxiety Disorder (SMAD) is “…born out of the internet revolution and a rapid growth in the use of social media… caused by a fear of being judged negatively and scrutinized on social media channels…”
Clinical psychologist and author Seema Hingorrany pointed out that SMAD starts when one is obsessively hooked on to internet such that his emotions and thoughts become dependent on the response they receive from the virtual world. The anxiety then builds up, resulting in dysfunctional behaviour.

Extensive usage of social media makes users with SMAD feel anxious when there are insufficient likes or Retweets as it could be interpreted as it "being negatively viewed by the users". This could affect their self-esteem when communicating with people in real life as well as their confidence to post and interact in their virtual life. When that happens, social media has been used to an extent whereby it affects the user's mental health and daily life.
3. Lack of Emotions causing Misunderstandings
The use of social media eliminates the non-verbal communication.
According to Forbes, only 7% of communication is based on words. The remaining 93% depend on facial expressions, hand gestures and tone of voice. This could easily cause misunderstandings.
For example, “Whatever” can be a term exchanged as a joke between friends, but if read in a more hostile tone, could be offensive. The lack of tone makes it difficult for the reader to understand the real intentions behind the words. If the misunderstandings are not clarified, this could damage the relationships between people.
